The Blind Beggar, Whitechapel
Two customers enter the Blind Beggar on Whitechapel Road. This old East End pub gained notoriety in 1966 when Ronnie Kray murdered George Cornell, a member of a rival criminal gang, by shooting him openly in the bar. Although none of the witnesses were willing to give evidence, this brazen act represented the beginning of the end for the Kray twins who were eventually to receive life sentences from which they were never released. However, the pub's name commemorates another story which captured the public's imagination in an earlier era. The blind beggar of Bethnal Green was Hugh de Montfort, son of Simon de Montfort, who, it was said, was blinded at the Battle of Evesham in 1265. Despite his noble birth, he ended up begging at a crossroads here to the east of London. This is almost certainly just a tale, but the blind beggar is also represented in a sculpture by Elisabeth Frink elsewhere in the borough - a very different looking beggar from the one in the pub sign.
