The Low Green is part of the extensive area of ground granted in C. 1205 by King William the lion to his new royal burgh of Ayr. This area originally extended from the River Doon in the south to the River Ayr in the north.

In the 16th century, the town councilís regulations concerning the grazing of the coastal sand hills reserved the right of the towns people to hold games on the area of land according to custom, a privilege which may well date back to the earliest days of the burgh.

Gifted by William the lion.

During the early 19th century the area known as the High Green was feued out as building plots by the council and became Workington square, including the sheriff court and county hall and the adjacent residential areas.

The Low Greenís ancient use as grazing land was finally ended in 1894 when it assumed its present roll as a major recreational space extending to about 18 hectares (44.5 acres) for the enjoyment of its visitors of the people of Ayr and its visitors to the area.
