For location see NY5062 : View from the roadside at Newtown .
The water pillar was the successor to the village pump, made possible by the provision of a mains water supply. People no longer had to pump a handle, the water was under pressure and came out at the turn of a knob.
We have learned about these devices from the excellent 'Village Pumps' website LinkExternal link .
