NS4376 : Area cleared of Rhododendron bushes

taken 4 years ago, near to Milton, West Dunbartonshire, Great Britain

Area cleared of Rhododendron bushes
Area cleared of Rhododendron bushes
After the area was acquired to form Lang Craigs Woodland, bracken was controlled, partly by spraying, but the growth of the invasive Rhododendron ponticum was also curbed. In this area, which is off the main paths, its removal appears to have taken place recently; at this spot, the Rhododendron bushes had previously formed a single large patch measuring over 150 metres N-S. For a view of the same area from its northern end, see NS4376 : Lang Craigs Woodland: a high-level path.

On the fringes of the cleared area were several NS4376 : Basal rosettes of Foxglove.

The woodland occupies 240 hectares (590 acres) that were acquired by the Woodland Trust Scotland in 2011. It is named after the Long Crags (or Lang Craigs), a line of cliffs Link making up the facade of the Kilpatrick Hills plateau. Lang Craigs Woodland is one of the 13 Commonwealth Woods, and is an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). New paths have been laid out (waymarkers were added in May 2015), and about 160 hectares of new native woodland planted.
The Long Crags
The Long Crags, sometimes called the Lang Craigs, are the western escarpment of the Kilpatrick Hills. The lava (Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation) from which they are made originated in widespread volcanic activity about 350 million years ago, in the Carboniferous Period. The escarpment is shown as "Long Craig" in Roy's Military Survey of Scotland (1740s50s). It gives its name to nearby Lang Craigs Woodland (c.2011): Link
