NS4376 : Basal rosettes of Foxglove

taken 4 years ago, near to Milton, West Dunbartonshire, Great Britain

Basal rosettes of Foxglove
Basal rosettes of Foxglove
For context, see NS4376 : Area cleared of Rhododendron bushes; the plants were on the fringes of that area. Note, from the contours of the map, that the land does not slope down consistently from NS4376 : The Long Crags to the lower ground at their foot. There are some terraces, and this was on the lip of one of them; hence the rising ground ahead, though the view direction is downhill.

Foxgloves have a two-year (binennial) cycle of growth. In the first year, the plants grow as a basal rosette, shown here, and they overwinter in this form; it is not until the second year that the familiar tall upright stem develops.
Lang Craigs Woodland :: NS4377
The woodland occupies 240 hectares (590 acres) that were acquired by the Woodland Trust Scotland in 2011. It is named after the Long Crags (or Lang Craigs), a line of cliffs Link making up the facade of the Kilpatrick Hills plateau. Lang Craigs Woodland is one of the 13 Commonwealth Woods, and is an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). New paths have been laid out (waymarkers were added in May 2015), and about 160 hectares of new native woodland planted.
