This little shop, and the building above it, are a grade II listed building (
Link ) dating from 1875, when it was built as a house next to the famous Governor's house.
But look at the plot. The alleyway incorporated in the width of the building. These old towns of the Danelaw frequently maintained, through a succession of ownership, the outlines of the old Viking town layouts, with a frontage of around 5.5 to 5.7 metres and a plot some 40 metres deep. If this isn't one of those, I will eat the sign that says "Eccleston's Yard". (It's the red smudge in the alleyway.)
