A wherry is a type of boat that was traditionally used for carrying cargo or passengers on rivers and canals, and is particularly associated with the River Thames and also with the Broadland rivers of Norfolk and Suffolk. In the late 18th century the name was given to the Norfolk wherry, a kind of sailing barge with large sails which was developed to replace an earlier cargo boat, the Norfolk Keel. The 'Pleasure Wherry' evolved in the late nineteenth/early twentieth centuries as railways replaced cargo business that had supported the traders. Enterprising owners realised that converting their boats to carry passengers was a way to replace the lost income, especially as the Broads were at the same time being discovered as a destination for tourism and recreation. At first, they simply featured hammocks and a stove in the hold of a trader but later, boat builders began to make craft specifically for pleasure sailing and holidays, incorporating living quarters instead of a cargo hold (LinkExternal link Wikipedia). Olive was purpose-built as a wherry yacht at Wroxham in 1909 LinkExternal link .
River Bure

The River Bure rises near Melton Constable, 11 miles upstream of Aylsham, which was the original head of navigation. Most of its length lies within the Norfolk Broads. Nowadays, the head of navigation is 10 miles downstream at Coltishall Bridge and it flows to Great Yarmouth where it meets Breydon Water and flows into the sea at Gorleston.
