A new square, known as the Student Forum, was created by demolition of the former Museum of Antiquities building revealing the rear facade of the imposing Armstrong Building from the newly pedestrianised Kings Walk NZ2465 : King's Road, Newcastle University. It is now home to the three-piece art work 'Generation' by Joseph Hillier, a former University Fine Art graduate, originally commissioned by One North East in 2003 NZ2465 : 'Generation' by Joseph Hillier

The three heads were relocated to the University after closure of the regional development agency, One North East, in 2011 LinkExternal link

The artwork ‘Generation’ is a group of three large sculptural human heads which were created by former Newcastle University Fine Art graduate, Joseph Hillier in 2003.

The sculptures have been made the focal point in the new Student Forum being created adjacent to the recently upgraded Students’ Union Building NZ2465 : University of Newcastle upon Tyne

Each head is made using a different metal and process, representing a different era of human and industrial production. One in lost-wax cast bronze represents ancient methods of making NZ2465 : 'Generation' by Joseph Hillier, King's Road, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, a ‘mesh’ stainless steel head presenting a contemporary vision of man NZ2465 : 'Generation' by Joseph Hillier, and the third (shown here) of rusted welded corten steel conveying the passage of time.

Generation is already well-known as it was previously displayed at the entrance to One North East’s headquarters at Newburn Riverside NZ1863 : Entrance to Stella House, Newburn Riverside. With the closure of ONE in 2011, the University stepped in to re-house the artworks, keeping them in the region for students, staff and visitors to the University to enjoy.

Artist Joseph Hillier trained at Newcastle University, completed an MA in New Orleans and worked in London before returning to Newcastle in 2005.
