The site is on former docks and the brief, developed in collaboration with the regional development agency One North East, called for a bold contemporary scheme that will establish the quality benchmark for future developments in the area. The scheme was designed to reconnect the town to the river and is characterised by ‘fingers’ of development separated by landscaped ‘slipways’ that provide inclined pedestrian links down to the waterfront. The simple, bold form and language have been praised by the Commission for Architecture in the Built Environment.
