BT business centre, Harton Quay, South Shields
£10.5 million BT business centre on the South Shields riverside. The building was designed by +3 Architecture LinkExternal link of Newcastle and built by built for South Tyneside Council by Miller Construction (now Galliford Try). It has beenleased to BT as a base for its local government UK operations. Construction work began in May 2010 and was completed in September 2011.

The site is on former docks and the brief, developed in collaboration with the regional development agency One North East, called for a bold contemporary scheme that will establish the quality benchmark for future developments in the area. The scheme was designed to reconnect the town to the river and is characterised by ‘fingers’ of development separated by landscaped ‘slipways’ that provide inclined pedestrian links down to the waterfront. The simple, bold form and language have been praised by the Commission for Architecture in the Built Environment.

The building itself remains a bit controversial, taking a prime spot on the riverside.
