Sculpture by Jim Roberts (2006) inspired by the La Strada nightclub at the junction of Station and Commercial Roads. It was one of a string of nightclubs, including The Cellar, Shoreline, Chelsea Cat, Kismet and Latino which made South Shields an entertainment hotspot.

A public garden was created on the site of the La Strada by Groundwork South Tyneside with the sculpture as a centre piece.

The La Strada opened in April 1961 in a former upholstery factory of Smith’s furnishers. It was converted by its local founder, Sandford Goudie, using £5,000 borrowed from his newsagent father. It was the first nightclub in the north of England and it marked a new era in 'glamorous entertainment' in South Shields at a time of the demise of theatres and music halls.
