Postbox, Abbey Gatehouse, Blanchland
The post office incorporated into the Abbey Gatehouse features an unusual "Ludlow" style white postbox which is thought to be one of only three in the country. The first wall boxes were installed in 1857 and presumably this one followed some time after. Originally postboxes could be any colour and thanks to Hilda Askew who was postmistress for 34 years this one retained its original colour when it was proposed to paint it red.
