Rothbury artist, John Craggs, designed and painted the historical mural on the wall of the former air-raid shelter at the top of the Side for refurbishment of Newcastle's Black Gate in 2014. The Black Gate was added to Newcastle's Castle between 1247 and 1250 and formed an additional layer of defence in front of the earlier north gate. Following refurbishments, the building now has an external lift clad in wood allowing visitors access to three levels, a reception area, shop and toilets NZ2563 : Black Gate, Newcastle upon Tyne
The Close and Side are two of Newcastle’s remaining medieval streets.
