Rothbury artist, John Craggs, designed and painted the historical mural on the wall of the former air-raid shelter at the top of the Side for refurbishment of Newcastle's Black Gate in 2014. It includes replica posters NZ2563 : Historical wall mural below Black Gate, Side (detail) and elements of the town's medieval history NZ2563 : Historical wall mural below Black Gate, Side (detail) as well as an image of the nearby 'Vampire Rabbit' NZ2564 : 'Vampire Rabbit', St Nicholas Church Yard

The Black Gate was added to Newcastle's Castle between 1247 and 1250 and formed an additional layer of defence in front of the earlier north gate. Following refurbishments, the building now has an external lift clad in wood allowing visitors access to three levels, a reception area, shop and toilets NZ2563 : Black Gate, Newcastle upon Tyne

The Close and Side are two of Newcastle’s remaining medieval streets.
