Frank's Bridge
Frank's Bridge
The bridge is a 17th century and is said to be named after a local brewer, Francis Birbeck. It carries the corpse lane way from Hartley or Winton across the River Eden. A corpse lane is the route funeral processions took on the way to the churchyard and there are supposedly stones at the end where the coffins could be placed while the pallbearers took a rest before the final climb up to the church.
