The Bluebird Café, Coniston Water
Named after Donald Campbell's famous boat, this café is on the lake shore next to Coniston Boating Centre. The original building was installed by the Furness Railway Company in about 1860 as accommodation for the crew of the SY Gondola, a pleasure boat which operated on the Lake in the Victorian era. Devastated by severe flooding in 2009,(see Link
), this attractive modern replacement for the original building, allows you to have stunning views of the lake while you enjoy a coffee. Note the high level of the lake in this photograph, taken a few weeks after Storm Desmond inundated areas of Cumbria and Lancashire with continuing heavy rain falling on saturated ground in December 2015.
