Richard's Castle is an old market town which failed due to the pull of nearby Ludlow, which all but had the status of a capital city throughout medieval times.
The Herefordshire half still has a church, St Bartholemews, abandoned because of structural problems and replaced by All Saints, still known as the New Church. The old church is still used occassionaly and is worth a visit even if just for the atmosphere. Cheap time travel.
