“Battling Bessie”, Liverpool Councillor, and later MP, Bessie Braddock, who died in 1970, was an ardent socialist and fiery campaigner particularly in the fields of maternity, child welfare and youth crime. She is commemorated by this life-size bronze statue at Liverpool’s Lime Street Station. The sculptor, Tom Murphy, has depicted Bessie Braddock holding a handbag in one hand and an egg in the other one as she was the politician responsible for putting the lion quality mark on British eggs (LinkExternal link Liverpool Echo). The statue is part of a larger work called "Chance Meeting" which also includes a statue of the Liverpool comedian Ken Dodd OBE (SJ3590 : "Doddy" at Lime Street).
Chance Meeting

The bronze statues of two of Liverpool's most iconic characters, Ken Dodd OBE (LinkExternal link ) and Bessie Braddock MP (LinkExternal link ) were unveiled in June 2009 on the site of the former Virgin Trains welcome lounge in the main concourse at Lime Street station.

Merseytravel commissioned Liverpool artist Tom Murphy to create the work, which shows the comedy legend and the late politician in a 'Chance Meeting' in the middle of one of the city’s most important gateways. It was unveiled by Ken Dodd on 11 Jun 2009 (LinkExternal link Liverpool Echo )
