Up Ilfracombe portion of Atlantic Coast Express rushing through Weybridge, 1953
View from the Down platform towards Woking and the West. In those days, the 'ACE' ran in several regular portions especially on Saturdays, as this day was, on 4th July 1953. The three or more portions from west of Exeter Central were combined there then, picking up more coaches at Sidmouth Junction, Seaton Junction and Axminster, worked through to Waterloo by one of Bulleid's fine 'Merchant Navy' Pacifics. This is the 10.30 Ilfracombe portion, due at Waterloo at 15.50, with No. 35004 'Cunard White Star'. This engine was built 10/41 as No. 21C4, became No. 35004 under BR, in 7/58 was one of the first to be rebuilt and after 10/65 when it was withdrawn, it was not preserved.
