Remains of Simonburn Castle
"The romantic ruins of Simonburn Castle rise half a mile west of the village. One walks along Castle Lane as far as the confluence of the Hopeshield and Castle Burns flowing swiftly down from the fells through their steep ravines. Here, where the forest descends to a charming dell and the burns meet, two small wooden bridges cross the water. Climbing steeply to the left one soon reaches the castle ruins, perched on a narrow plateau between the two ravines."

The Great Parish of Simonburn from Hadrian's Wall to Carter Bar: An Historical Guide by Cecil Dickson Ward Davis (1972).
Simonburn Castle

Simonburn Castle stands on a steep promontory formed by the confluence of two deeply incised streams. The remains are of a 13th Century tower house, partly reconstructed as an eyecatcher from Nunwick Hall in 1766, and surviving as a ruined building. Only the barrel vaulted ground floor of the tower survives, with the remains of a turret on the north-west side. The tower was probably ruinous by the end of the 16th century.
