Dawdon's Fossil Tree
Dawdon's Fossil Tree
This fossil remnant of a tree has been installed on the open ground above Nose's Point, . The plaque reads
"The fossil here is likely to be a remnant of Sigillaria or club moss, a species that survives today as a short ground-hugging plant.
But in the Carboniferous swamps and forests, around 320 million years ago, it could grow up to 30 metres high.
This fossilised remnant is a section of the main trunk and would have quite a large specimen.
It was discovered in Dawdon Colliery."
