The broad sands of Blast Beach were heavily polluted by coal waste from the nearby Dawdon Colliery and other industrial enterprises. Over the period 1997 to 2002, the "Turning the Tide" project made great progress in restoring the coast of County Durham to its pristine state. Nose's Point beyond.
