This is the site of one of three Medieval, artificial, shallow lakes surrounding Dunstanburgh Castle; it was fed from a nearby spring ponding up against the storm-beach deposits north of Dunstanburgh Castle. The lake can be partly equated with the dimensions and costs of a ditch mentioned in Medieval documents of 1313-1314. The site has since been drained, and is crossed by ridge and furrow ploughing but often floods again during wet conditions. Lilburn Tower (1313-1325) is on the left.
