"Pathways to Knowledge"
One of the earliest sculptures installed as part of the St Peter's Riverside Sculpture Project. Designed and executed by Colin Wilbourne and Karl Fisher, it depicts the Venerable Bede, and a page taken from an illuminated manuscript kept at St Peter's Church nearby. Not initially intended for any particular site, it was finally installed outside the University of Sunderland Library and was unveiled by Her Majesty the Queen on 18 May 1993 on the same day as Sunderland was granted city status.
