Defending Dorset in 1940: the Maiden Newton - Poole Harbour Stop Line (70)
-
Pillbox (type CP/6/40/111): DoB ID: S0000082
Moreton Ford - 'Norcon' Pillbox. The ford over the River Frome at Moreton is the location for this small, round, mainly concrete pillbox, named after the company who built it, Norcon Ltd., a manufacturer of concrete pipes. It could never have offered the equivalent protection of a conventional reinforced concrete and brick pillbox, but it could be built in large numbers very quickly, and at low cost. The occupants would have relied on earth banking and sandbags for additional protection, as the structure on its own would have been vulnerable to a concentrated burst of machine gun fire. It's basically a 6ft x 4ft concrete pipe sunk into the ground with a small brick access pit at the arched entrance to the rear. The base and the edging around the roof is of brick, and the roof itself on this example, appears to be of sectioned concrete. Around the outside are 6 loopholes, simply slots cut into the concrete sides.
