My guide, fellow-Geographer Richard Humphrey, told me that although it looks good now, at one time the view of St John's Church was spoilt by an office block behind it. Sure enough there are photos on the Peterborough in Pictures website that give a glimpse of it, such as this from 1965: LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) – a glass-clad box from the 1960s. Photographers down the years have chosen viewpoints and compositions that keep it out of sight. It was still there in the late 1980s but has since been demolished. The Square was refurbished 2008-10 to form a handsome public space. The 1965 photo shows traffic, raised flowerbeds, and a rather grubby Guildhall.
