Old braided track
Old braided track
A series of grooves can be seen receding from the photographer's position; they make up a single ancient track that consists of several interweaving braids.

The grooves are parallel to NS4378 : The Black Burn, and just to the north of it. Followed in this direction, they cross the Black Burn at NS43227812.

For a section beyond the burn, see NS4377 : Ancient trackway; in that area, the track passes to the south-east of a long-vanished farmstead: NS4277 : Remains of an ancient farmhouse.

The Firth of Clyde is in the background.

For the course of the track if followed in the opposite direction, see NS4378 : Old braided track, taken from about the same place as the present picture, but looking east rather than west.
Network of old limestone industry tracks :: NS4379
A very extensive network of ancient tracks on the moors in West Dunbartonshire links old quarries, ruined lime-kilns, and other sites connected with the local limestone-burning industry, which flourished in the 18th century. See Link for a Geograph article about the network, and LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view of it.
