The Military Road (B6318) east of Harlow Hill
Taken from Hadrian's Wall Trail which runs alongside the road in this part. The straight line of the road rising in the distance to Eppies Hill is a consequence of it having been constructed on top of the Roman Wall in the 1750s, often (wrongly) attributed to 'General' Wade.

The construction was controversial at the time but the line of the Wall was preferred by landowners, because it already acted as a boundary and meant the minimum loss of land to the new road. The existing remains of Hadrian's Wall provided a surface for the new road and for drystone walls on both sides.
