SO2112 : Stoking holes, old lime kilns, Blackrock

taken 4 years ago, near to Blackrock, Monmouthshire/Sir Fynwy, Great Britain

Stoking holes, old lime kilns, Blackrock
Stoking holes, old lime kilns, Blackrock
These overgrown holes on top of two of the three kilns were used to add limestone and coal to the kilns, which were served by the Darren Ddu quarry nearby. A front view of the kilns is shown in SO2112 : Disused limekilns, Blackrock. The bank of kilns is a Grade II listed structure. The ground around the holes is being cleared of ruderal scrub to promote conditions favourable to butterflies.
