The "Spinning Wheel", Belfast (March 2016)
A very long-established locally-owned business, on the ground floor of the Scottish Provident, at 9 Donegall Square West. It seems set to move to new premises and be replaced by a national multiple. There is (21 January 2016) the following application for planning permission “LA04/2016/0275/F Change of use of ground floor and first floor from retail unit to a unit for the sale of food and drink along with associated ancillary uses, minor alterations to rear elevation to include replacement of air conditioning condensers, 1 no. air conditioning condenser, 1 no. new freezer room condenser and 2 no. extract grilles. 9 Donegall Square West Belfast BT1 6JH”.
This photograph appears as a matter of record only. I have no connection with the business or the successor. J3374 : Greggs, Donegall Square West, Belfast (December 2016) shows the premises after conversion to a “Greggs”.
J3374 : The Spinning Wheel, Belfast (August 2017) shows the business after moving to Fountain Street.

The Scottish Provident Building, Belfast
The Scottish Provident Building was built between 1897 and 1902. A triumphant finale to the Victorian era it announces its greatness over more than half of Donegall Square West. It is so rich in architectural detail that it would warrant its own book. This is a collection of photographs mainly showing the extravagant detail present in the building.
