NZ2226 : Ventilation shaft over the Shildon Tunnel

taken 18 years ago, near to Shildon, County Durham, England

Ventilation shaft over the Shildon Tunnel
Ventilation shaft over the Shildon Tunnel
This shaft provides ventilation for the Shildon Tunnel on the Bishop Auckland to Darlington railway. The fearsome array of ironmongery on the top is intended to act as a deterrent to anyone foolish enough to think of climbing up and looking down the shaft.
