Flounders Folly a look back from the Dale-Lower Dinchope, Shropshire
This view of Flounders Folly aka the Monument was taken from the lane leading through Hope Dale from Westhope to Lower Dinchope. It shows well the prominent if exposed position of the tower. The reason for its building in 1838 and its siting is now lost to us. Some have suggested that Benjamin Flounders had it built so that he could keep an eye on his estate workers, or that it was built to mark his 70th birthday and others suggest it was built so that he could see his ships in the Mersey. Mr Flounders must have had phenomenal eyesight if this was the true reason. Time taken 3.39 pm BST (British Summer Time).
