Former Peakirk Wildfowl Trust
Former Peakirk Wildfowl Trust
The Peakirk Wildfowl Trust was opened in April 1957 by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, which was founded in 1946 by the naturalist Sir Peter Scott (1909-1989), the son of the Antarctic explorer Robert Falcon Scott. The Wildfowl Trust was renamed the Peakirk Waterfowl Gardens in 1991 when the site was leased to the East of England Agricultural Society. After operating at a loss for many years, the gardens closed in December 2001 with the remaining birds being rehomed. Efforts to reopen the site as a public park have so far proven unsuccessful. As can be seen in this image, the site is now overgrown. The Wildfowl Trust was a popular visitor attraction in its heyday and it is sad for locals who remember it fondly to see it in such a derelict state.
