War Memorial, Old Eldon Square
The Newcastle First World War Memorial in Old Eldon Square was unveiled by Earl Haig on 26th September 1923. It is in the form of a bronze statue of St George killing the Dragon. The statue is mounted on a tall white stone pedestal with a simple cornice and stepped base.
The pedestal carries a relief carving of a lion on the front dado face, under the dates 1914 – 1918 and 1939 – 1945. On the left face, under the word PEACE, is a curved bronze relief depicting a mother and child and an angel. On the right face, under the word JUSTICE, the figure of Justice (holding scales) stands with another female figure, looking down at a semi-nude female figure on her knees. There is a bronze wreath under the inscription MEMORY LINGERS HERE on the rear face of the pedestal. Also at the rear, on the base of the pedestal, is the main inscription:
A TRIBUTE OF AFFECTION
TO THE MEN OF
NEWCASTLE DISTRICT
WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES
IN THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM
THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE
