The Ouseburn Barrage was constructed in 2009 to control the flow of water, to alleviate flooding and to maintain a more stable water depth and quality for wildlife in the Ouseburn Valley. Navigation in now through the lock at the mouth of the Ouseburn. This lock is controlled by two vertical shutter gates. The lock is under an arch of the bridge carrying City Road.
