This is the back (or eastern) rock face of the disused quarry. For a closer look at the surface, see NS3979 : Bonhill Quarry: chisel marks.
Bonhill Quarry

The quarry, which is now disused, was worked for its Old Red Sandstone. It appears on the first-edition OS map (surveyed in 1864), and later expanded southwards (as shown on the map revision of 1896), but it was labelled "disused" on the map revision of c.1914. The quarry was still in use in 1891 (in that year, three men were injured in an accident while blasting with gunpowder). A smaller disused quarry is located about 250 metres ENE of it: Link
