Old boundary
The subject is as in NS4178 : Old boundary, but the view is in the opposite direction.

In the present picture, the boundary consists of two mounds, which are parallel and close together, the one on the left (the north-east) being the more substantial.

This is a wide-angle view; it would otherwise be difficult to convey in a photograph something that is quite obvious when following this boundary in person, namely, that the ground to the right (the south-west) is much greener than that to the left.

It is likely that this was a field boundary, with the area under more intensive cultivation being the one on the right.

Present-day mapping would suggest that the field was associated with Maryland Farm, which has been in existence for many centuries. However, there was, a few centuries ago, a nearer farm, called Broadfield. Its traces are not apparent on the ground, but the farm building itself was near the location of present-day Square Wood (the building perhaps stood near what is now the northern corner of that wood).

I consider it likely that, given its age, the field would have been associated with Broadfield rather than Maryland.

Some rig-and-furrow markings (which had already been reported after being spotted on aerial photography) are visible in that green area on the right, though they are not very clearly seen in the present picture, except perhaps in large image sizes. I have depicted them separately: NS4177 : Cultivation marks: rig and furrow.

In the present view, the Long Crags are left of centre in the background. Dumbarton Rock can be seen, at the far right, on the near shore of the Clyde.
