The twentieth century Beetham Tower dwarfs its surroundings. At 169 metres, this 47-storey building is the tallest residential development in Europe. The lower floors belong to the Hilton Hotel whilst above are luxury penthouses.
Here, we are looking from part of the site of the Roman fort of Mamucium (also known as Mancunium) where the settlement that was to become Manchester grew from 79AD.

SJ8397 : Mills across the water Building on the right is a modern pastiche. I looked at this early in 2008 and realised it for what it was quite quickly. There is an excellent complex of converted mills in this corner. Just as important as Ancoats.
