Masonry from Fotheringhay Castle
The castle was probably founded around 1100 by the Earl of Northampton.
In the 1630s the castle was dismantled and most of the masonry removed, leaving only the earthworks, a small section of the masonry is preserved behind these railings. The castle site is protected as a Scheduled Monument.
King Richard III was born in the castle in 1452. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned, tried and executed in the castle in 1587.
