The Italian Gardens area of this Royal Park, off Bayswater Road. This area was created in 1860 to a James Pennethorne design. The Pump House once contained a steam engine that would operate the fountains. In fact the pillar on the roof is a cleverly disguised chimney. A stoker would be employed throughout Saturday nights to keep the engine running and to pump water into the Round Pond, so on Sundays there was enough head of water to run the fountains without the engine having to be run. The multi-storey block in the background houses The Lancaster London Hotel in Westbourne Street, i.e. the A402.
