Scotland Field
Scotland Field
The name of the field according to Steyning's 1840 tithe map. Most of the original field now lies to the west of the former Shoreham-Christ's Hospital railway which was constructed in 1861, see TQ1913 : Scotland Field/The Gore/Barn Field. This section has now been merged with TQ1913 : Six Acres/Calves Leaze/The Green and TQ1913 : Calves Leaze Lag to the south. Originally at the far eastern end was Scotland Farm which is marked on Yeakell & Gardner's 1778-83 map and all OS maps up to 1911 but disappeared between then and an aerial photograph dated 1946. The name has nothing to do with the country as a Scot was once a form of taxation, the phrase scot free originates here too and refers to somebody who did not have to pay it. Truleigh Hill can be seen beyond.
