Peatland railway in operation
Peatland railway in operation
The peatlands round Lough Boora are criss-crossed by light railways for transporting the peat. Formerly, the peat was used for firing a power station; nowadays it is used for the manufacture of peat briquettes. This train is returning empty from the factory(to the left/east) to the peat workings.
