Gunsgreen House in Eyemouth
Gunsgreen House in Eyemouth
Overlooking the town and harbour, Gunsgreen House was built for local businessman, John Nisbet, in 1753. The house was designed and built with more than simply a home in mind, it was specially adapted to hold smuggled goods, Nisbet's principal business. Over the years, the law was closing in and impounding his imports, particularly tea, which was highly taxed in the 18th. century. In time, Nisbet was declared bankrupt and was forced to leave his house before moving to Berwick upon Tweed.
Today the house is managed by a Trust and is well visited local museum and events centre. Business meetings can be accommodated as can weddings all overlooking the most wonderful scene around one of Scotland's oldest, still working harbours.
