The Ancient Kirk of Lamberton
The Ancient Kirk of Lamberton
Lamberton Kirk is one of the most historic kirks in Scotland and could rightly be know as 'The Cradle of the United Kingdom'. It was there, in July 1503, where Princess Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII of England, and her entourage, met the Commissioners of Scotland, to thrash out the terms of her marriage to King James IV of Scotland. While they had already been 'married by Proxy' in London a month earlier, the meeting at Lamberton was more to put the finer points in place to the king's 'liking'. The couple were married in person a month later at Holyrood Abbey.
Lamberton was not only a place where Royal marriages were discussed; many 'irregular' marriages took place at nearby Lamberton Toll House which was, like Gretna, a place where couples, mainly from England, ran away to be wed without their parents' consent, mainly because in England, they were still too young to be married.
Lamberton Kirk is also the burial place of the prominent local family of Renton.
