SK7419 : Egerton Lodge, Melton Mowbray, Leics
taken 8 years ago, near to Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England
Egerton Lodge, Melton Mowbray, Leics.
Egerton Lodge, a private retirement home on Wilton Road, is seen here from the southern side of the River Eye. It was built in 1829, on the site of a previous house, as a hunting lodge for Thomas Egerton (1799-1882), the 2nd Earl of Wilton. It has also previously seen service as the offices of the Urban District Council. It is Grade II-listed. The gardens seen here are those of Egerton Lodge Memorial Gardens, one of Melton's many public parks. Stone tablets bearing the names of Melton's fallen World War I and II soldiers are visible in the remembrance area at the top of the flight of steps that appear to lead into the grounds of the retirement home but don't actually do so.
