South Norwood: the Sensible Garden
The Sensible Garden is an area of land next to South Norwood High Street, where what was formerly a rather nondescript patch of grass by the railway has been turned into a community garden. The scheme is the brainchild of the self-designated South Norwood Tourist Board, community activists and pranksters. The garden has no governing body and is maintained by anyone who feels like it. It takes its name from Captain Sensible (né Ray Burns), bass player for The Damned and solo hit artiste in his own right, who hails from this area and went to school just across the road: at the centre of it is a yellow bench designated the Sensible Seat. See
