North Western Gardens
North Western Gardens
North Western Gardens was reconfigured in 2000 to prioritise pedestrian movement as part of a multimillion pound Heritage Lottery Urban Parks funded renewal programme. The park used to be known locally as 'Bog Island' because its underground toilets were marooned in a sea of cars. While traffic is still present on two sides of the triangular space, one side is now anchored to the shops. Thick planting borders of perennials surround the green lawn, wide pavements and dozens of long comfortable benches can now be enjoyed without interference from traffic.

In the foreground is the wooden sculpture of the March Hare which is one of four Alice in Wonderland themed sculptures installed in Llandudno in 2012 to mark the 160th anniversary of the birth of Alice Liddell, who was the inspiration behind Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland stories, and the historical connection between the Liddell family and Llandudno.

On the right is an hexagonal sculpture SH7882 : Millennium Sculpture by Craig and Mary Matthews LinkExternal link created in 1999 for the Millennium celebrations.

In the background is the Tudno Castle Hotel which dates back to the 1870s and was originally two hotels, the Temperance to the south and Tudno Castle to the north. After the pair joined, the establishment became the North Western Hotel but went back to being the Tudno Castle sometime later. It was made a Grade II listed building in 1976 LinkExternal link The building has been unoccupied since 2008 but is now undergoing restoration and is set to be transformed into a 63-bed Premier Inn, restaurants and retail units.
