Clergyman's Widows' Almshouses, 16-22 Church Street, Ashbourne
Grade II Listed almshouses with a rainwater head dated 1768. They were reportedly built in 1753 under the will of Nicholas Spalden (c1650-1713), dated 16th April 1710. He left money to build four clergy widows' almshouses and ten others for the poor of the town. Spalden was a wealthy coach harness maker who Derbyshire County Council tells us lived in London but was born in Ashbourne however The National Archives list his will as 'Will of Nicholas Spalden, Coach Harness Maker of Ashbourne, Derbyshire'. Although Spalden was declared bankrupt, because the money was declared a charity, it was allowed, and came from his lands in Dublin; this 50 year court case is why it took so long to build the almshouses.
