The Old Manor House and Church of St Mary and St Barlok, Norbury
The Old Manor House and Church of St Mary and St Barlok, Norbury
Grade I Listed Manor dating back to the early 13th century but here a substantially 17th century rebuild of a 15th century hall attributed to the Maskerys, tenants of the Fitzherbert family who built the medieval hall house the remains of which are visible behind the tree centre of picture. Sir John Fitzherbert supported the Royalist cause during the Civil War and was killed at Lichfield in 1649. His son William inherited Norbury in a ruinous state. Used as a farmhouse for many years prior to its restoration 1964-69 it has been a National Trust property since 1987 and they rent out the farmhouse as a holiday cottage. The church is also Grade I Listed and like many churches its origins date back to Saxon times. The current building is 14th to 16th century restored 1841 and 1899. The graveyard contains 4 Grade II Listed graves.
