Steyning Grammar School, Church Street, Steyning
All the buildings in view belong to the school which was founded in 1614. However, the two jettied structures either side of the brick entrance date from the mid 15th century and from the 1540s belonged to the Guild of the Brotherhood with the entrance still known as Brotherhood Hall. Beyond are the former Smugglers Arms Inn and Hollands Cottage; the former dates from the late medieval period and is currently used as offices, the latter dates from the 15th century, was purchased in 1935 and for many years was the residence of the headmasters though is no longer used for that purpose. The school has been in continuous use for just over 400 years and classes are still held in the building on the right and the school library occupies the ground floor of the building to the left of the Brotherhood Hall, which is no longer used as an entrance. The school itself merged with Steyning Secondary Modern in 1968 with that school's site used as the upper school teaching years 9-13 and this site used by years 7 and 8. It is one of the largest schools in West Sussex and the only state institution in the county still to accept boarders.
