This image along Westgate was taken from the front of Westgate Church. The building on the left with the black fascia is Beales department store while the Wortley Almshouses public house is visible in the foreground on the right of the image. The latter was originally constructed in 1744 as a workhouse and was converted into almshouses in 1837. It has served as a pub since 1981.

UPDATE: The Wortley Almshouses closed in June 2022 following a decision by the Sam Smith's brewery. The Peterborough branch of Beales closed definitively in January 2023, having previously closed in 2020 when the company went into administration; the store had reopened in May 2021 after the Beales brand was purchased by a firm called New Start 2020.
