Memorial on Skelderskew Moor
Memorial on Skelderskew Moor
The memorial, which is sited close to the bridleway, is to two men who were shepherds on the Gisborough (sic) Estate
who joined the Grenadier Guards in 1914. Robbie (Robert) Leggott was killed in action in 1916 on
the Somme aged 19 (he had lied about his age in 1914). His name appears on the Thiepval
Memorial in Flanders, his body was never found. Alf Cockerill was wounded in the head in July 1916 during close fighting while the 4th Battalion Grenadier Guards were
holding trenches near Ypres and was declared unfit for any further duty.
In fact he never really recovered since his head wound caused epilepsy. He died four years later at the Chalfont Colony, Buckinghamshire of epilepsy and meningitis. The year of his death, 1920, is no longer clear on the memorial stone
